Fake Relief Fund Texts From "Dan" Promise $5,286 Already Issued in a Name
By Ken Duggan · June 7, 2026
Consumers are reporting unsolicited text messages claiming they have uncollected federal relief money waiting in their name. The messages direct recipients to mylostcheck.com, and the broader campaign cluster also includes reliefcheckhelp.com. Both domains were registered in early December 2025.
Four reports filed with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) on April 11, 2026 describe nearly identical texts. One reads verbatim:
"Dan from www.mylostcheck.com our records show you may have $5286 waiting in a relief check that's already been issued in your name but has not yet been collected this could be from past relief programs or federal assistance payments visit www.mylostcheck.com search your name and collect it before it's"
The message cuts off mid-sentence. The dollar figure of $5,286 appears identical across all four reported versions, which suggests a mass-blast template rather than any personalized record check. The sender identifies only as "Dan" and cites no agency, no program name, and no legitimate contact channel. Federal benefit programs communicate through official mail or verified government portals, not anonymous text messages from unnamed individuals.
The Domains Behind the Texts
Both mylostcheck.com and reliefcheckhelp.com were registered on the same day, December 5, 2025, and neither carries an SSL certificate. The voicemails swap one domain for the other while keeping the identical "Dan" script and the identical $5,286 figure, which points to a single operation rotating disposable lookalike domains rather than two separate efforts.
The Phone Numbers
Three numbers appear in connection with this cluster. (404) 868-8288 carries two Federal Trade Commission (FTC) complaints and has been reported in Kingston and Marietta, Georgia. (928) 218-8254 and (917) 924-3596 carry no FTC complaints at this time but surface in the same reporting context. If you received a message from any of these numbers directing you to claim relief funds online, treat it as suspicious.
What to Do
Do not click any link in an unsolicited text message about uncollected relief funds. Do not visit mylostcheck.com or reliefcheckhelp.com. Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) to report it to your carrier, then file a report at the BBB Scam Tracker so others can find the warning.
