Windows Error Scam? So I was recently on the phone with Customer Support for a GoDaddy.com and accidentally hung up on them. I figured that they had my number and that they would call me back soon and sure enough I received a call from the number 714 and I proceeded to answer. The call quality was very poor and I mostly heard static. The caller identified him self as technical support and began telling me that there were issues with my computer. This was not the same person who I previously speaking to in my previous call. This new caller had a thick Indian accent which I assume is because he was in fact working in India since that is the common stereotype for technical support. He told me to open up Event Viewer and check my recent errors and said that these were what was wrong with my computer. It was very difficult to understand specifically what he was saying because of his thick accent and the poor call quality but I managed to hear him tell me to go to a site called "Ammyy.com" and download their remote desktop software. This is when I became suspicious of the caller. However the impeccable timing of the call still lead me to assume that everything must be fine so when the caller requested to take control of my desktop I allowed it. The man started to say some things about malware and viruses and that I was "infested with them". The use of this phrase seemed out of place and unprofessional so I asked him what company was he working for. After a small pause he told me that he was working for Windows. Not Microsoft, but windows. I promptly hung up and turned off my computer and uninstalled the software that I had downloaded. The timing for this call was perfect since it came right after I accidentally hung up with GoDaddy support which is why I still wonder if it was a scam. Perhaps the caller was confused to what I meant by company and was referring to my OS being as that was what he was working on. Have any of you heard or experienced a scam like this? Or

This is Windows Support, Your Computer is Sending us Errors I am beginning to lose my patience with the Asian (Indian?) scam artists who call me - sometimes four times per day - trying to perpetrate some nonsense with my PC. One variant of the scheme can be read [here on ARS Technica](http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/10/i-am-calling-you-from-windows-a-tech-support-scammer-dials-ars-technica/), and it's mildly entertaining... unless the calls come repeatedly. The call display is always spoofed; it either says "private name/private number", or has some gibberish numerical string where the phone number should be. The calls are auto-dialled, and frequently there is a long pause before the caller picks up. Today, for fun, I tried to combat them by wasting their time. I deliberately behaved as if I was intellectually challenged, and clicked/typed the wrong things. This worked well enough to frustrate the first "technician", who then handed me off to his supervisor. Both of these guys spoke as if they had a mouth full of marbles, so it was pretty easy to milk out the conversation by misunderstanding them. FWIW, the two sites they tried to get me to access were "support.me", and "ammyy.com" - both of which are basic pages that will allow you to download a ware that ultimately can get them remote access to your PC. Heaven only knows what will happen if one is crazy enough to do as they ask. But - after a call from my 81-year-old Dad asking me what to do when people like this call, I began to feel more alarmed and offended by these calls. And so here is my question: why aren't our telcos trying harder to intercept or prevent this crap? It seems like it would be simple to compare the call origin with the call dispaly data and filter out (at the very least) a good fraction of the calls. The sheer volume originating from one location would be a good indicator of the source of the irritation. I've read plenty about this online, seen articles saying the govern
