Seeking advice/help after being scammed out of ~2500 Good Evening Reddit, Regretfully I am reaching out to you seeking advice in light of my recent situation. In summary, I was scammed out of ~2500 dollars via a phone call scam. Here is my situation: I am a restaurant owner in a large US city. In recent years money has been tight so some bills may have been paid late or in parts, but everything was always balanced eventually. I mostly handle the cooking while my partner handles the finances. On Friday (February 21), minutes before a heavy lunch rush hour, I received a call from a man named John representing the local power company. He informed me that we were delinquent on our bill for too many days and that they were going to shut off the restaurant's electricity with-in the hour if we don't pay them. We contested his argument because my partner is sure he paid the bill, but John was persistent claiming they never received the payment. Its very easy to see in hindsight that this was a typical scam set-up, but at the time I was quite flustered, so I panicked and followed their instructions. The "bill" was for $1900, which is slightly above normal, and in order for it to be "paid" immediately we were asked to send (via the phone) [Green Dot cards.](https://www.moneypak.com/) We purchased the cards and transferred the funds to John. Today, my partner was called early in the morning with the another proposal from the company, "We have finally received your last payments, so we are going to cancel the GreenDot funds immediately. Your current balance is still $500, which is due by the end of the day." My partner paid this balance in the same method. Upon hearing this addition to the situation when I arrived at work this morning, it finally dawned upon me that I was being scammed. I immediately called the police. They took my information and told me it is very unlikely that anything will come from their investigation and that a detective may contact me in 4 to 6 w

NIPSCO scam making rounds again, starting in the Hammond Indiana area. A group of people claiming to be NIPSCO are scamming people out of their money again. They will ask for your last 3 payments and then say they will refund it due to a short circuit in the electricity meter. They ask you not to pay online but rather to pay through https://www.moneypak.com/. Upon payment being received, they will send a technician to your house, with a check in your name, for the refunded amount. This is a scam. Here is a recording of the type of things they will say. It's all in Spanish and they are likely targetting hispanics because, well, they are usually some of the poorer groups and less likely to question something. Also the hammond area has alot of hispanics. http://vocaroo.com/i/s1ZbZU6Rweru Watch yo money yo!
