Suing landlord in NY State, wasted a bunch of money trying to serve him. What should I do now? After I left my house at the end of summer 2012, I inquired about my deposit money after not hearing from my landlord for 2 weeks. He decided to inform me that my tenancy resulted in bug problems, dirty carpets, and leaving his furniture in the house. (I was apparently supposed to throw them away). I triple checked everything before I left and saw none of those things. He decides to keep my $2,200. He also runs a boat business in the backyard, which is critical for my mistakes later on. I filed small claims suit against him BUT I never got his home address. First, I listed his address from 411.com but the court sent the papers back to me due to a non-existant mailbox. Next, I hired a process server to serve him the papers at my old house/his business. He is rarely there so I waste $80. Next, I pay the process server again (now $275 this time) and try to set up an appointment with the landlord to meet the day before the court date. I pretend to be an interested tenant to get him to come. The meeting falls through and I end up extending the court date as a last resort plan. I am now out $355. How do I stop hemorrhaging money through stupid mistakes? This is in **NY State**.
