I googled "US Passport Renewal". The top site was https://passportsubmission.us, which looked like a US Department of State Passport Renewal Site. (I acknowledge that in small print near the top of the site there was a banner that stated "PASSPORTSUBMISSION.US operates as a private service provider with no affiliation to any governmental organization.) I proceeded to enter my personal information on pages that looked like official US Government website forms. I reached the page for payment and noted a charge of $141, about what I had expected for a passport renewal. I paid the fee, then received a PDF form with the information I had typed in their website now typed into blanks on the form. The instructions said to print this form and mail it in to the State Department with payment and passport photo. When I realized this was not a true application, and that I had paid $141 for nothing, I immediately tried to contact the company by email and by phone to ask them to cancel the charge. I have received no reply, the phone number reached a recorded message with no voicemail.
