Debt-reduction solicitations define area code 224, and they do so at a scale that crowds out nearly everything else. Of the 2,028 total complaints logged against this northeastern Illinois code, 795 fall under the "reducing your debt" category covering credit cards, mortgages, and student loans. The top four numbers by complaint volume all carry that same label: 224-301-9872 (238 complaints), 224-200-9918 (151), 224-255-8542 (137), and 224-301-9923 (95). A fifth high-volume number, 224-255-8413, adds 73 more complaints in the same category. Together those five numbers account for roughly 694 complaints, nearly the entire category total, suggesting a tightly coordinated operation rather than scattered individual actors.

Three numbers in the top eight fall outside that dominant category. 224-301-9934 drew 85 complaints and 224-255-8419 drew 14, with no category attached to either. 224-463-8202 generated 13 complaints, also uncategorized. Their complaint counts are modest relative to the debt-pitch cluster, but their presence alongside it raises the possibility that some numbers are testing different approaches or rotating scripts.

The secondary categories are considerably smaller. Impersonation calls pretending to be government agencies, businesses, or personal contacts produced 103 complaints, and medical and prescription solicitations added 43 more. Home improvement and cleaning calls accounted for 23. The 200 dropped-call or no-message complaints suggest a meaningful share of dialing ends before contact is made, consistent with auto-dialers probing for live pickups.

Geographically, the reported complaint locations cluster in the Chicago suburbs: Naperville, Des Plaines, Buffalo Grove, and Arlington Heights, along with Chicago itself. Although California and Florida also appear among reported states, the Illinois concentration fits the code's own assignment to the Chicago metro overlay. FCC records show four filings, three involving live callers and one involving a prerecorded message, confirming that both human agents and robocall infrastructure are in use.

224 ranks 9th among its 44 Illinois-assigned sibling codes by complaint volume, a position that signals above-average pressure within the state. The debt-reduction cluster, with three numbers sharing the 224-301 and 224-255-8 prefixes, points to deliberate number selection within the same code to maintain local-looking caller ID. As that cluster continues into mid-2026 with no sign of tapering, the operation appears stable and still actively reaching Illinois suburban households.
