Area code 385 is Utah's overlay code, sharing geography with 801 across Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Saratoga Springs, yet complaints against it have also surfaced in California, Florida, and as far as El Paso, Texas. Since first appearing in February 2026, 475 distinct numbers have drawn 1,381 total complaints, with activity still ongoing as of June 2026. Among Utah-assigned codes, 385 ranks 20th out of 44 siblings, a mid-tier position that nonetheless reflects a concentrated and active cluster of scam-linked lines.

The single largest complaint category is Dropped call or no message, with 265 complaints, a pattern that typically signals robocall operations probing for live pickups. Three of the top four numbers belong to this category: 385-289-2282 leads the entire code with 83 complaints, followed by 385-786-8757 at 28 and 385-525-8448 at 24. The sheer gap between the top number and the rest suggests 385-289-2282 is running an unusually high-volume automated dialing campaign out of the Salt Lake City area.

Debt-reduction pitches are the dominant identified scam type, accounting for 203 complaints across the code. These calls, targeting credit card, mortgage, and student loan holders, are the clearest monetization signal in the data. Impersonation calls claiming to represent government agencies, businesses, or personal contacts add another 116 complaints, with 385-293-2413 generating 12 of those on its own. Medical and prescription solicitations contribute 26 complaints and vacation or timeshare pitches add 23, rounding out a portfolio that spans multiple fraud verticals simultaneously.

FCC records, though limited to 12 filings, show that prerecorded messages account for 80 of the recorded call modes versus 36 live calls, confirming that automation is the primary delivery mechanism. Four numbers in the top eight, including 385-261-7110 with 25 complaints, 385-256-9612 with 11, 385-401-0399 with 10, and 385-401-0339 with 10, carry no assigned category, meaning their complaint volumes stand on their own as signals of uncharacterized but documented nuisance or fraud activity.

The threat picture here is one of a geographically anchored but nationally reaching code running parallel campaigns across debt, impersonation, and medical fraud verticals, with a small number of high-volume numbers doing disproportionate damage. The close numbering of 385-401-0399 and 385-401-0339 raises the possibility of sequential number blocks being cycled deliberately to distribute complaint load, a technique that extends operational life and complicates pattern-based blocking.
