That pattern points to aggressive auto-dialing infrastructure that hangs up before a human answers, a technique used to verify working lines for follow-up campaigns.

One number drives a disproportionate share of that activity. 618-526-4251 alone accounts for 286 complaints, all in the dropped-call category — roughly 17 percent of every complaint filed against the entire area code. That concentration is unusual and suggests a single high-volume dialing operation rather than scattered independent callers. Six other numbers in the top eight — 618-432-4136 (29 complaints), 618-795-4446 (28), 618-844-9890 (11), 618-368-5733 (8), 618-213-9878 (8), and 618-266-3596 (8) — carry no category assignment despite meaningful complaint counts.

Debt-reduction solicitations are the clearest secondary threat, generating 201 complaints and covering credit cards, mortgages, and student loans. Behind that, 123 complaints involve impersonation of governments, businesses, or personal contacts, and 56 relate to medical and prescription pitches. An additional 19 complaints target energy, solar, and utility customers. Complaints have also been filed by recipients in Florida and Georgia, meaning the spoofed 618 prefix is reaching well beyond southern Illinois.

FCC records show prerecorded messages outnumber live-agent contacts in this code, consistent with the dropped-call dominance — robodialers that do connect are delivering automated pitches rather than staffed calls. The code ranks 12th out of 43 Illinois area codes by complaint volume, placing it in the upper tier of in-state nuisance activity. With complaints still arriving as of June 2026, the operation behind 618-526-4251 in particular shows no sign of winding down, and the cluster of high-complaint uncategorized numbers suggests additional campaigns that have not yet been fully characterized.
