I contacted the first google search for locksmith and found https://sfdoornlock.com/foster-city/. I called their number (510 956 7519). I requested a quote range and was told the technician could give it to me on site. I was uncomfortable giving out my exact address so I routed them to the nearest McDonalds initially. Within 20 minutes, a supposed technician called me (415 573 2058). He asked for my exact address. I gave it to him. He arrived within 30 minutes. I asked him, in person, for a quote range. He said he would have to look at the door type first, avoiding giving me even a range to work with. He only gave me a rough estimate upon looking at the garage door and said it would be $400 "before taxes and other fees". After opening the door, he asked for $660. We asked for an itemized receipt twice, and he said yes. We gave $400 cash and $200 zelle after negotiating down to $600. He left without providing an itemized receipt. I called back the original number and asked if this was standard practice to not provide a reasonable quote before the job, and to not provide any sort of receipt. They denied the technician that was sent out was related to their company. I asked how the technician got my information then. They declined to provide clear reasoning even though it was very clear that my information was given to the "technician" by this "company". I looked up the company afterward and realized it is not a registered, licensed, legitimate business and that I had gotten scammed.
