I received a call at work saying my father had been in a car accident, had injured the caller's niece, and was beaten unconscious. The story was actually believable (especially considering the rush of emotions after being told your loved one was in a serious crash), and they gave a pitch about keeping him in their custody with the intent to kill him if I didn't pay the damages. Fortunately, I had a strong feeling it was a scam, so I faked a bad connection and called the police. It may not seem that bad, but if you are close to your family this can do some emotional damage, even if you are almost certain it's fake.
