I am reporting a fraudulent business impersonating Thrifty Car Rental. I had an existing reservation with Thrifty and, because I was running late, searched Google for their customer service phone number. I called 1-866-414-5270, which appeared in the search results. The individual who answered claimed to be a Thrifty representative and was able to locate my reservation. He stated that because I was running late, I would be charged $69.83 or risk losing my booking. He further claimed that no vehicles were available unless I paid this fee. Believing this was legitimate, I provided my credit card information (using a virtual card). The caller also requested my billing address, phone number, email address, and date of birth. When I questioned the need for my date of birth, I was told it was required to prevent someone else from claiming my reservation. This raised concerns, so I requested an email confirmation before proceeding. The email I received came from [email protected] , which is not affiliated with Thrifty. At that point, I suspected fraud. I then accessed Thrifty’s official website directly, reviewed my reservation, and confirmed that it remained active with no additional charges required. Shortly afterward, I received another call from 267-337-7623, which appeared to be the same individual attempting to pressure me into completing the payment. Despite informing him that I had verified my reservation directly with Thrifty, he continued insisting that my booking was in jeopardy. I ultimately picked up my rental vehicle from Thrifty without any issues or additional charges. This appears to be a scam involving impersonation of a legitimate business to obtain payment and personal information. I am submitting this report to help prevent others from being misled.
