I got a call from a Santa Monica number (310) 865-6140: It was a PG&E representative (supposedly) clamming they have a senior discount program for those over 60. And I'm over 60 so I should sign up. Their call-back number is 419 237-5233 (turns out that's in Ohio, not California). He said the name of the senior discount program is "AAA Natural Gas." That seemed very odd. The discount price would be $1.20 per therm. I'm paying $2.83 per therm now. That's over half off. However, it just didn't pass the smell test. So I called PG&E. They have no senior discount program! The actual PG&E rep said they charge a delivery fee of $2.22 per therm and a procurement fee (the cost of gas itself) of 0.2138 per therm. And "AAA Natural Gas" isn't the name of a program, it's a gas provider company. He explained that even if I bought natural gas for free, I'd sill have to pay PG&E's $2.22 per therm delivery fee. So, that supposed senior discount of $1.20 is no discount at all! And with the delivery charge, it would have RAISED my bill from $2.83 per term to $4.03 per therm! That's a SCAM! And it's not fly-by-night operation, but a big gas company. I called AAA Natural Gas's call-back number and asked them to cancel my sign-up or order or whatever it was. He said they would cancel it. We'll see if they really did or not. I have since found out that this is a wide spread effort to take advantage of seniors. They're tricked into getting natural gas supplied by AAA Natural Gas at a substantially higher price.
