I contacted a company operating under the name “New York Fireplace & Chimney Service” through their website (chimneyfireplacenewyork.com) to repair a fireplace fan. I was told there would be an inspection fee, and that after the inspection I would receive a written report, photos, and a quote for the repair. I was also told the inspection fee would be applied toward the repair if I proceeded. A technician came to my home, collected the inspection fee, and left. The company never provided the promised inspection report, photographs, or written quote. Over the following six weeks, I called the company many times requesting the report and quote that I had paid for. Representatives initially claimed the report had been sent. During this process I learned that they are not a fireplace repair company, do not have a license, and are simply a call center. When I requested a refund of the inspection fee since the inspection documentation was never provided, my calls were repeatedly transferred, disconnected, or I was hung up on. I was told that a manager would call me back, but no one ever did. My calls were disconnected more than eight times. The phone number listed on the website (646-849-1939) now goes unanswered, and the website used to advertise the service is no longer reachable. The company has also refused to identify the actual business entity responsible for the service. I have filed a complaint with the New York State Attorney General Consumer Frauds Bureau and am submitting complaints to additional consumer protection agencies.
