April 14, 2026 approx. 1:30 p.m. in Michigan (where I reside). Received phone call from 786-579-2071, after addressing me by my name, a man identified as agent Albert De Costa from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, ID # CR120091, claimed to verify if I had applied for a Chase Visa credit card in Pennsylvania. He had my social security number and my residential address, which he both read over the phone to me; I believed the call was authentic. He proceeded to ask me which credit cards I have and amounts owed on each; instead of telling him, I asked him to read them to me and I would answer if it was correct or not, which he did: a Master Card (which I do have from the stated bank but not the balance amount he stated on that card), a Visa (from a bank which I don't have and told him so), and mentioned the names of 2 other credit card accounts which I told him I don't remember the balances or the interest rates he was quoting. I said that, for security purposes I was not going to give them the details that he should know to be true (balances and interest rates). He had my real information in front of him; I gave him nothing. He asked me if I had acquaintances or family members whom I would have given my social security number or credit information, and I stated "I never told anybody, nor I know anybody in that state". He proceeded to issue a STOP on the application with Cancellation Number: EL201458. He stated that my identity had been compromised and I had to pay attention; in the future, I'd have to call again the same phone number he called from to report a fraud. It all sounded legitimate but BBB confirmed it was a scam and suggested I report this. It terrifies me: How can they have my social security number??? And my residential address associated with it???
