I purchased a car from a local dealer, my guess is that the dealer themselves are also a victim of this scam. I was offered a bumper to bumper coverage by the dealer until I got my own insurance. Turns out, the coverage they offered me isn't real at all. The letter I keep receiving wants me to call the number (888) 671-8210 to activate it, as others have realized is actually a phishing scam phone number. I'm going to assume the dealer thought they were offering something useful, but they themselves are unaware that they're distributing a scam to unsuspecting customers without realizing the harm they are doing. We are informing you that if your factory warranty has expired, you will be responsible for paying any repairs. I received a letter that was addressed to us, but had the name of someone who shared my first name, but not last, and is not associated with the household (I double checked). It did describe there was a signature required for a 2018 toyota corolla which IS a vehicle driven by a family member living at that address. The letter itself has little information, besides a couple things, one being a short paragraph that reads "Our record indicate that you have not contacted us to have your vehicle service contract activated. We are informing you that if your factory warranty has expired, you will be responsible for paying any repairs. However, if expired, you can still activate a service contract on your vehicle before it's too late." Under it has text that reads, "Please call: 1-888-671-8210 today. Para Espanol call 1-888-507-7663. They also wrote a customer ID number: 065TR40651. The hours of operation is: Monday-Friday 8:00AM-8:00PM EST, Saturday 10:00AM-3:00PM EST. Lastly, there is a chunk of text that is within a box labeled "coverage explanation" that reads, "Athena Protection is an independent nationwide company marketing vehicle service contracts on behalf of leading third party administrators.
