Very coincidentally well-timed sms message...how do phishing scams find my phone? So I ordered a package recently from Etsy, and it's currently being delivered to me. The package recently got to a USPS warehouse and has been in transit since yesterday. And just this afternoon, I got this text message from number I don't recognize that says: >The USPS package has arrived at the warehouse and cannot be delivered due to incomplete address information. Please confirm your address in the link. > >(Some link that looks something like https://(random letters)/(random mix of letters and numbers) here). (Please reply to 1, then exit the SMS, open the SMS activation link again, or copy the link to Safari browser and open it). > >The US Postal team wishes you a wonderful day! The very very VERY perfect timing of this made me think 'wait what? my PACKAGE! I certainly want it to come on time wouldn't I?' so I clicked the link of course- JUST KIDDING. I checked USPS' website first and it seems yeah, it's a phishing scam. But it really makes me wonder why it was so well-timed with my package being sent. In the end, it's probably just a very well-timed coincidence. But I cannot help but wonder, how do phishing scams even target people? Did this scammer know I was waiting on a package? And HOW did they get my number if so? Or maybe it really is a coincidence, I dunno. What are your thoughts y'all?
