My father-in-law received two phone calls from someone purporting to be with the "CNA Law Group," telling him that they needed to serve him with legal papers regarding a banking transaction from more than 10 years ago. They gave him a 10-digit alphanumeric "case number." They did not provide a name, but they provided a phone number. I am an attorney and called the phone number, in order to determine if this was a legitimate phone call. When the person on the other end of the phone picked up, it was immediately apparent that they were working in a call center. I asked for the name of the law firm, and they said, "CNA Collin and Associates," which does not appear to have a website. I asked for the name of the attorney handling the case, and they refused to provide that information without a letter of representation from me. I asked them what this matter was about, and they refused to provide that information without a letter of representation. I asked for the address where I could mail such a letter, and they refused to provide it. I asked where they were located, and they said Dallas, Texas. I asked if they were registered with the Texas state bar, and they refused to provide that information. They did provide me with an email address of "legal@collinand associates.com," but this is clearly a fraud scheme praying on older people.
