We did a Google search for British Airways contact phone number. Google AI provided a summary with an authentic looking number. We called and made a flight reservation. It was in reality not a BA operative and they charged the flight plus seat booking + an upgrade fee. When we called BA they confirmed that the base cost was paid but not the seat reservation, taxes or other fees. The net difference was about $1,800 for two people traveling to London from the US. BA refunded the core cost and we rebooked with the real BA representative. We cancelled our card and reported fraud. Then updated security on BA.com. Lessons are A) NEVER search for a booking number - go direct to the site. B) Suspicion when the email confirmation was not from BA, although the attachment was - the. scammer was booking online. C) We have read other reports that the scammer books a fully flex flight and then cancels it for the refund. In addition, in our case, they paid themselves directly for the taxes, seats etc. We felt uncomfortable, despite the flights looking booked on BA.com and luckily stayed up all night figuring the scam out. Hence we could cancel in the 24 hour window and rebook with the authentic company. We will not ever book anything by phone again and already avoid any texts. It is a sad world.
