the thing about proton mail android nobody tells you (your subject lines aren't actually private) ok so I've been using proton mail on android as my main thing for about a month now because gmail was basically just... I don't even know, psychological warfare? anyway figured I'd write this down because the marketing is a bit misleading and I keep seeing people assume everything is locked down when it's not quite that simple the message bodies are proper e2e encrypted, that bit's legit. even proton can't read them, so if swiss police show up with paperwork they just get gibberish. that's the bit that actually works as advertised but here's what caught me off guard - subject lines aren't protected the same way. they call it "zero-access encryption" which sounds impressive until you realise it just means they're encrypted on the disk but proton can still process them for search and threading. so like, if you write "meeting about the secret merger" in the subject line and someone comes knocking with a warrant, that's not protected I only figured this out after reading their actual technical docs which... yeah I should've done that first so now I just write really boring subjects. "update" "notes" "invoice" whatever. anything actually sensitive goes in the body where the maths works properly also metadata is still a thing - they know who you're emailing and when, just not what you're saying. which is fine for my threat model (keeping stuff away from advertising surveillance) but if you need to hide the fact you're talking to someone at all, this isn't it performance wise though? it's genuinely fast now, opens in like 2 seconds on my pixel. offline mode actually works which is new - I was searching through old emails on a flight with zero internet and it just... worked. old version would've just shown me an error screen wrote up the longer version with comparisons to tuta and stuff [here if you're weighing providers if useful.](https://baizaar.tools/proton-mail-andr
