summonsed for student loan debt. a sheriff stopped by today (she was pretty nice!) to drop off a summons for my girlfriend. I don't understand all the legalese, but basically it says she owes 20 grand (on this loan, i think there are others she's paying) and pay 135 bucks to take it to court to for defense to be heard. Obviously, there's not much defense here, there's just not enough money and she wasn't responsible enough to set up a payment plan. I assume this means the loans have been defaulted for some time and are no longer just delinquent. We are quite poor (basically no money). The lender and plaintiff is the NJ Higher Education Assistance Authority, http://www.hesaa.org/Pages/DefaultedNJCLASSLoans.aspx • What steps should be taken now? • Is it too late for her to set up a payment plan? • Is a lawyer essential?
