[US] Think mom almost fell for a scam while searching for a home to rent Mom used the Nextdoor app, saw a listing for a house to rent for only $1000 a month and contacted the "owner" to meet at the house for a tour. She texted me those baseline details and said she was going to head to the location and meet with the owner at noon-ish the next day. The price obviously immediately gave red flags. She suspected as well. Did a map search of the neighborhood, not bad. The low price made no sense, but hey, maybe someone had a gruesome death in there. I decided to go with her. As we're getting close and texting them we're 10 min out, we're told it'll have to be a tour with them on the phone instead as something urgent came up. I'm checked out at this point but we decided to at least show up to see it. We get there, get them on the phone, and they urgently want us to follow a link texted to mom's phone to invitationhomes.com. A dude was on the phone with an unfamiliar accent, mom previously messaged a woman on Nextdoor. Link was received and clicked regrettably while I was checking the backyard out and mom in front. It started with needing her name and dob. Info was entered. I walk back to the front & I'm back in the picture at this point as the next page populates. It's asking for ID/passport info along with some other personal info I didn't even get the chance to read, as I immediately closed out of the page. Before we close out the call I instead ask for an in person tour at a later date but he says he's a pastor and he will be in another state handling another property in the upcoming days. Oh thank god he's a pastor lol, let me give you all my info. We ended the call and left. My problem with all of this is: Nextdoor is legit, invitation homes is legitimate (I think?), but the whole setup here was way off. So many red flags. What do we think here? Can answer additional questions.
