Privately hiring an in-home care giver - is this a good idea? My grandma is 90 and is starting to need some help around the house, and someone to keep an eye on her. Her mind is completely sharp, but her body is starting to fail her and it's gotten to the point where it's overwhelming the family and we want to hire extra help. My parents have the idea that the best solution would be to find someone who would live with grandma full time, and would have a set of defined, part-time responsibilities. As compensation, they would get a salary as well as a rent free basement suite. My grandma lives in a large, nice home in a central part of an expensive city, so this could be attractive for the right person. Her home is already equipped with a basement suite. I don't know the exact list of duties they have in mind, but it would probably be something along the lines of checking in on her daily, some light meal prep and cooking, and maybe some light tidying up or help with grocery shopping or things like that. I don't think it would extend to things like helping her shower, which would demand a different skill set. She already has a cleaner who comes to do the "real" cleaning weekly. What I learned from my parents is they are interested in finding and paying this person privately rather than through a caregiver agency. Is it just me...or does that seem a little risky? I'm worried about having someone in my grandma's house who might take advantage of her if we don't have the security of some organization saying they've been vetted. I'm also worried about complexities when it comes to tenant's rights and to employee's rights/tax wit holdings, etc. Does anyone know if this is a feasible idea? If it is, are there any special steps to take to do this the "right" way? If it matters, this is in Canada. Edit to update: Thanks so all the great and helpful responses. I've also found a few online resources that I thought were helpful, in case anyone else is looking fo
