Is Kobe Beef in the USA a Scam? So I was watching Travel HD and they were talking about a restaurant in NY called Megu http://www.megurestaurants.com/ . The place looks very good though very pricey but I was curious about restaurants like these and others in the US that sell Kobe beef on the menu. Is it real or is it a scam. I emailed the Travel Channel directly and I am waiting for a response. I'll update the thread when I get something. Here is my email to them-------------- I just enjoyed watching your show Steak Paradise and the segment about Megu Steakhouse in New York. In your segment about the location, you mention that Megu imports its beef from the Kobe region of Japan. According to Forbes, http://www.forbes.com/sites/larryolmsted/2012/04/12/foods-biggest-scam-the-great-kobe-beef-lie/ , Kobe beef is not allowed to be imported into the USA by the FDA. The article also states that " According to its own trade group, the Kobe Beef Marketing & Distribution Promotion Association in Japan, where Kobe Beef is a registered trademark, Macao is the only place it is exported to – and only since last year." Is your program wrong? Is Megu pulling a fast one? Can you clarify this? ---END EMAIL What's your take? I am not really concerned whether Kobe beef tastes better or worse or if it is just hype, I just want to know that if and when I order Kobe beef in the states, am I getting the real deal? Thanks (first reddit post ever)
