I got a speeding ticket. Does an officer with a radar gun need to begin tracking my speed from a specific distance for speeding ticket to be legitimate? (MA) Here's the gist: I was driving down the road outside of a thickly settled area, traveling the speed limit, when I see a police cruiser driving toward me. We are no more than 200 feet apart when we are first able to see each other because we met near a bend in the road. So he drives by me and in my rearview I see him slow down and turn around. He pulls me over, tells me that I was driving over the speed limit, and I get a ticket. I'm definitely going to contest this ticket because I definitely was not speeding. To prepare myself for the hearing, I've been trying to educate myself more on automobile law. From a couple sources, I've believe I read that in order for the officer to give out a legitimate speeding ticket, he must begin tracking my speed from at least 1/4 of a mile away outside of a thickly settled area and at least 1/8 of a mile away in a thickly settled area. However, I may have misunderstood what I read. **So the question is:** Does the officer need to begin tracking my speed from at least 1/4 of a mile away in order for my speeding ticket to be legitimate? Edit: let me know if this is in the wrong subreddit Here is one of the sources I mentioned: http://www.motorists.org/ma/tic.html See the section about MGL 90/17
