On March 10, 2026, I purchased an "Annual LLC Registration Virginia" service from Next Step Filings (nextstepfilings.com) for $165.00 (Receipt No. REC11997). The solicitation was presented in a manner that led me to believe it was an official or required government filing, when in fact it was a third-party commercial service duplicating a $50 filing I had already completed directly with the Virginia State Corporation Commission. Within 20 minutes of purchase I contacted Next Step Filings to request a refund. Their AI phone assistant acknowledged the request and assured me I would receive a response within 24 hours. No response came. I called multiple additional times over the following days with no resolution. I then sent a formal written refund demand via email, to which a representative named Lisa responded confirming the refund would begin processing. To date I have received neither the refund nor any further update despite continued follow-up. Next Step Filings markets itself using solicitations that closely mimic official government correspondence — referencing Virginia state code, using urgent "final notice" language, and pre-filling business information — while disclosing only in fine print that they are not a government agency. This presentation is deceptive and likely causes many Virginia business owners to pay for an unnecessary service under the false impression that it is a legal requirement. I am requesting that this complaint be reviewed and that appropriate action be taken to protect other small business owners from the same deceptive practice [BBB Scam Type: Online Purchase] [Business: Next Step Filings] [Location: VA, USA - 22840]
I received a letter titled “2026 FINAL NOTICE – Annual Registration” for my business in Virginia. The notice was sent by a company called Next Step Filings and stated it was a “Commercial Filing Service for VA Corporate Entities.” The document requested a payment of $135 to complete my 2026 LLC registration and included a deadline to respond by January 20, 2026, with a due date of January 31, 2026. It also stated that the $135 includes a $50 state fee and a late filing fee. There was a mention of a $10 discount if paid online before January 10, 2026, using coupon code “SAVE10.” The mailing includes: Business name and address pre-filled A QR code linking to NextStepFilings.com for online payment Fields requesting my signature, printed name, email, and business name Language referencing Virginia Code §13.1-1050 A return address for payment: Next Step Filings 11357 Nuckols Rd #1259 Glen Allen, VA 23059 In fine print, it states that “Next Step Filings is not a government agency, is not affiliated, and not providing legal advice.” No state seal or official government department name is listed. This appears to be a third-party solicitation that may confuse business owners into thinking it is a required state filing.
