I work in the IT department of a college. One of our athletes received a text message indicating that they have been invited to join our school team's NIL Club, with the link "https://nilclub.com/invite". However, our school does not have any NIL clubs. Additionally, on that page are several dark patterns. First, the page says "3 other athletes invited you to join" even though I manually typed in the URL, it does not contain a unique identifier, and I did not provide the site with any identifying information - so it could not possibly know how many people did or did not invite me, as it has no idea who I am. Secondly, the page also contains the text "Expires in 1 hour" even though there is no actual expiration of any kind (false urgency). Furthermore, upon some brief research it appears that the website has a smartphone app, and that this app has been reported to automatically send, to all contacts on the user's phone, text messages like the one our student received, without asking permission nor confirmation to do so. It is for this reason that I did not include the phone number from which the text originated in this report - I believe that phone number belongs to another student who was likely unaware of the text message being sent.
