I was driving home around 2am last week after playing a show with my band. I didn't feel overly exhausted, was not intoxicated, and didn't feel any tell-tale signs that I might be dozing off. We've all had that feeling on a road trip where your eyes get heavy, you start slapping yourself to stay awake, open the windows, etc. I didn't experience any of that. One minute I'm driving, the next I'm crashing into a concrete barrier on the highway, which sent me spinning across all the westbound lanes. I slammed to a stop on the barricade on the other side of the 4 lanes (not into oncoming traffic; the barricade was in place to prevent that.) My only explanation was that I dozed off. I've been to the doctor for blood tests to see if anything else is going on, because this did not feel like nodding off. It was too sudden. My car is demolished, but amazingly, I didn't hit anyone else. I sustained only very minor injuries, including very sore ankles and knees. Highway patrol arrived on the scene. While he was writing up the accident report, he told me he could detect a "faint" scent of alcohol on me, and asked if I'd submit to field sobriety tests. I told him I'd do what I could, but my ankles were pretty sore. He had me walk the line, follow the pen with my eyes, stand on one foot, etc. Despite my pain, I felt like I did okay. Next thing I know, he's handcuffing me and putting me into the car. He informed me he suspected I was intoxicated. I was very articulate, carrying on a normal conversation. No one in their right mind would have thought I was drunk. I asked what parts I failed, and he would not say. He informed me he was going to take me to the station for breath testing. If I was not intoxicated, he'd take me home. If I was, he'd book me. Fair enough...I knew I was not intoxic
