Possible fraudulent check for nearly $100,000 (US) I recently met with an widowed, elderly lady who paid cash for her home. Living only off social security, her home started to need repairs that she could not afford. For this reason, she got a reverse mortgage from a company out of Texas. According to her, the company did not spot the damage to the roof and did not include that in the terms of the reverse mortgage. In order to save her home from irreparable damage, she used some of the funds to get the roof repaired which caused her to fail to complete the repairs required in the terms of the reverse mortgage. Her mortgage was sold by the servicer to several different investors. Some of these investors it is hard to see when and how they acquired a role in this reverse mortgage. Unfortunately, after receiving foreclosure notices, she sought the advice from a family member who seems to be a conspiracy theorist. He aided her in following these instructions: http://www.setoffdebt.com/QandA.html After signing the affidavit, she then attempted to discharge the debt of nearly $100,000 by writing a check off a closed account by following the steps above which include writing on the back of the check: "Not for deposit EFT only Authorized Representative without Recourse For discharge of debt" The strangest thing is is that she has not been arrested or contacted by authorities, not only that, she has a form from the mortgage company stating that the debt was paid in full. This happened over six months ago. However, she is now under the threat of eviction and is being brought to court by one of the investors of the reverse mortgage. In this state, you do not need to go to court to be evicted. The whole thing has left me confused. I want to help this person since she confided in me. She is obviously desperate to keep her home and unfortunately trusted in the advice of a person who surfed the web and became an "expert". My questions are: * What is the deal with this chec
