I hired a man to reinstall MS Windows on my laptop. He's now holding my laptop hostage. The man who answered the phone said it would be a flat fee of $135.00 with free pickup and drop off! I gave him my address and Lorenzo came over and picked up the PC and said he'd have it fixed by tomorrow. He called back 2 hours later to tell me there were serious problems with "irregular fractals" on the hard drive and that they had to do additional work to repair the problem. "I was told it would be a flat fee. I want my laptop back," I told him finally. He said additional charges were necessary to fix the hard drive, and when I asked to just get the computer back he said I have to drive to Astoria tomorrow to meet an associate and he will give me the laptop back. I just want my laptop back at this point and I'm afraid of what might happen if I meet him. Anybody heard if SmartPCRepair.org? Update: So, after some very good advice from you good folks, I returned the call and told the man I would call the police unless he returned the laptop immediately. He initially told me that he was not intimidated by me, but I told him where to meet me (in a public place) and that he had a choice of either returning it or not. I added that I would be submitting the story to Reddit and would certainly let everyone know how this turned out. For me, it was ultimately a happy ending because I got my laptop back. I called his bluff and he capitulated.
