Where's the love for information gathering? Social engineering is defined as a non-technical method of intrusion hackers use that relies heavily on human interaction and often involves tricking people into breaking normal security procedures. Yet, this entire subreddit is requests filled with requests for tips on how to manipulate and influence people. I came to this sub to learn more about social engineering, not to read how-to questions. If I wanted that I could have went to Yahoo! Ask, Quora, or /r/advice. On a side note, we should have a sub dedicated to questions and advice on how to influence someone. On another side note, it seems as if a significant fraction of people here are 'psychopathic' pre-teens trying to feel cool. Rant over. The purpose of this post is to raise the topic of gathering information up for discussion (and then thoroughly discuss my favourite note-taking application, hurr durr), not bashing /r/SocialEngineering. Information gathering is a critical skill when learning something new, be it about people, companies, or a new topic. If you're on this subreddit, you're probably gathering information on how to manipulate a particular person. But the information is all over the place. If you're serious about the art of manipulation, you probably have at least dozen tabs open right now - a tab for each related subreddit, and a few other tabs containing websites so informative closing the tab before finishing your research feels like a sacrilege. I'm surprised that this was never brought up. How do you effeciently gather and organise information about people and techniques? **Social Engineering: The Art of Human Hacking** recommends Backtrack, BasKet and Dradis. However, they are limited to Windows and Linux. I've tried using word documents and excel to note down my discoveries about certain people or subjects.
