got arrested today for the first time for 'assault on a family member/assault, simple assault, against family member' even though I am a victim of domestic violence, my abuser got off scot-free. help? what do I do now? any advice appreciated Location: Virginia, USA Hello all! I'll try to keep any major identifying information out of this, but basically my partner(well ex) instigated an altercation today in which he drunkenly spat on me, grabbed me, and I shoved him back and he fell on the ground, nothing crazy; yet afterwards he called the cops, claiming I beat his ass, kicked him, punched him, and threatened him with a knife. the whole nine yards I guess. The cops believed him, even without any bruises or markings, and charged and arrested me. He has prior history, I do not. This is my first charge or arrest ever or whatnot, so I got out relatively quickly with a bond (I think that's the right terminology?) after seeing the local magistrate and I have a date to go to court to actually set my trial date. Any help or resources would be appreciated. It feels awful since he grossly exaggerated what happened to the point of just flat out lying, and the cops deemed me responsible somehow? I think because I have anxiety and was super nervous, they wanted it to seem like I was the perpetrator. I don't know.
