I signed up for a subscription on WeWorkRemotely.com?, operated by TinyBoards Inc, that was advertised as a monthly job seeker plan. The initial price was listed as $2.95, with the impression that this was either a low-cost trial or a monthly subscription. At no point during the checkout process was it made clearly and conspicuously known that I was agreeing to a 12-month non-cancelable contract. After signing up, I received a receipt email that stated I could “cancel anytime” and included a link to manage my subscription. However, upon following the link and accessing the dashboard, there was no option to cancel or downgrade my plan. The button to select a lower plan was grayed out and non-functional, and there was no cancellation flow available anywhere on the website, directly contradicting their own terms of service, which state cancellation can be done “via your job seeker dashboard.” I contacted their support team and requested a cancellation and refund. They refused, stating that I had agreed to a full 12-month billing cycle and that “all charges are non-refundable.” They confirmed that even though I had tried to cancel, I would be charged monthly for the full 12 months, regardless of usage, value, or functionality of the service. This is a textbook example of a deceptive billing practice and dark pattern UX, including: • Advertising a monthly subscription, then hiding a 12-month fixed billing commitment • Promising cancellation via dashboard but offering no working cancellation mechanism • Refusing refunds even when cancellation is requested immediately after signup • Using broken links and misleading terminology (e.g., “cancel anytime”) to trap users I have already filed a chargeback through my bank, which was ruled in my favor.
