New Year’s Day in China, Just as hectic as your holidays might be The past New Year’s Day, January first, 2021 was a public holiday in China. It’s not a traditional holiday in China, but more and more people, especially young people are taking it as an occasion to meet and connect with friends and family. So, without planning it, my brother and I bumped into each other at my mum’s place on that day. It has been a while since we last saw one another. I live a few blocks away from mum and visit her weekly. My brother, on the other hand, lives in the other end of the city and visits her monthly. We rarely bump into each other during our visits.  As usual, the bulk of the visit was spent on cooking. Side note, for those who feel obliged to visit your aging parents regularly, cooking for them is a great way to learn about your beloved’s week and allow them to brief you about how all your old neighbors and relatives are doing at the same time. And the length of your visit is under control as well. I mean, how long does it take you to cook the meal, enjoy it together and the cleaning& chitchat afterwards? It takes me about 3 to 4 hours. At the end of my visit, mum gets a clean house, (intentionally) leftover food for the next day and me feeling I have performed an act of good daughter. It’s efficient and practical, just like the way we’re being trained to do at work. Since it’s a holiday, both I and my brother felt we can’t just abandon mum after the usual routine. Without discussing with one another, we unanimously felt that we should stick around a bit longer to mark the occasion. A few ideas were proposed and we decided to hit the mall. Maybe mum would find something she likes there. My brother was going to drive us there. We left the house and walked towards the parking lot. Upon arriving there, he laid his hands on a motorbike. I was puzzled. Is he going to drive us to the mall with that motorbike? Where is his Audi? He has been driving an Audi for the past ye
