Being sued out of state A non-redditor friend is being sued for a medical bill out of state (the bill is in Indiana, she lives in Florida). There are a lot of really weird things going on with this one: - the bill is from almost 10 years ago when she lived there. - she no longer lives in Indiana, and has no ties there. - the medical bill was part of a car accident and so her car insurance should have paid it anyway. - none of this stuff was actually served to her. It was sent to her mother's address. On the first point, it is almost certain that the SOL has expired on the debt, so the company really cannot pursue it. In fact this is the first she has ever heard of it. Yet they've filed in court this year to get the money. Because she doesn't live in Indiana, there's no jurisdiction. I found [this page](http://www.serve-now.com/resources/process-serving-laws/indiana#serviceuponpersonsinactions) describing the cases where an out of state person could be served, but she doesn't conform to any of them. The last part is just to give a reason why she doesn't think she would owe this. They never brought it up before and now 9 years later they are saying it wasn't paid seems strange. There is no way that she wants to go to Indiana for this. She doesn't even have money for a lawyer, let alone flying back and forth to Indiana to fight against this bill. What options does she have? I found instructions on how to file for a motion of dismissal, but you still have to appear in court to argue that.
